Housing Assistance For Single Mothers in New Jersey

Housing Assistance For Single Mothers in New Jersey
According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, more than 470,000 New Jersey children lived in single-mother homes in 2009. Single mothers in New Jersey can obtain housing assistance through state and federal programs. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that more than 156,000 low-income New Jersey families receive rental assistance through federal programs, which can include public housing and rent subsidies. Government housing programs do not extend eligibility exclusively to single-mother households, and applicants must meet income guidelines.
State Homelessness Prevention Program
The State Homelessness Prevention Program, administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, offers financial assistance for low- to moderate-income households to help prevent foreclosure or eviction. The program only offers limited financial support for families facing temporary financial hardship. Recipients can receive help through grants or loans and the DCA pays funds directly to mortgage servicers or landlords on behalf of participants.
Housing Choice Voucher Program
The DCA administers the Housing Choice Voucher Program in New Jersey. Also known as the Section 8 Program, the HCVP provides a rent subsidy, which recipients can use to rent homes, apartments or townhouses on the private rental market. New Jersey housing agencies across the state determine applicant eligibility and administer subsidies. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the voucher program; all rental housing must meet guidelines established by the local housing agency. Participants must pay a portion of the monthly rent, often about 30 percent, and must meet income limits to qualify.
State Rental Assistance Program
The State Rental Assistance Program, administered by the DCA, provides rent subsidies for low-income New Jersey residents who do not receive assistance through the HCVP. The program offers assistance for households with incomes up to 40 percent of the median income, based in region and family size. Participants can receive the subsidy for a maximum of five years. Participants who start receiving HCVP subsidies must relinquish assistance provided by the State Rental Assistance Program.
New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency
The New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency offers housing assistance for homeowners, home buyers and renters. The HMFA's Mortgage Assistance Pilot program provides financial assistance for homeowners faced with foreclosure due to temporary financial hardship. The MAP makes no-interest loans to cover mortgage payments for up to six months, not to exceed $20,000. The HMFA's Refinance Rehabilitation Program provides refinancing loans, with fixed-rate mortgages of up to 30 years, for homeowners who need to rehabilitate a house. The HMFA also provides on its website lists of affordable housing developments for senior citizens and families.
Public Housing Program
New Jersey public housing agencies administer the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Public Housing Program throughout the Garden State. The PHP offers affordable housing for low-income households in various styles, which can include high-rise developments or single-family homes. PHP participants must meet income guidelines to qualify and typically pay no more than 30 percent of their income for monthly rent. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the state of New Jersey offers more than 39,000 public housing units.

Low Income College Grants For Single Parents in New York-Grants For Moms

Low Income College Grants For Single Parents in New York-Grants For Moms
Whereas approximately 6 percent of married couples lived in poverty as of 2009, nearly 17 percent of single men lived in poverty and almost 30 percent of single women, according to the National Poverty Center.
In New York, single parents with low incomes have a host of college grants for which they may apply, and should therefore complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to determine income eligibility.
Pell Grants
While the government does not award federal funds based on marital status, it does award grants according to income. As such, the first grant for which single parents in New York with low incomes should apply is the Pell Grant.
Single parents who earn $20,000 may qualify for up to $5,550 a year, although they may qualify if they earn less than $50,000. Most important, Pell Grant recipients may be entitled to other government grants.
Tuition Assistance Program
The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is a program available only to New York residents. As TAP is a need-based program, students will need to divulge total income. The award amount varies, but students who are single with dependents may be eligible for up to $5,000 per academic year. The award amount is based on whether students are enrolled in graduate programs or undergraduate programs.
Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP)
While the State University of New York's Educational Opportunity Program requires that students demonstrate the ability to complete college-level programs, eligibility primarily is centered on students' financial needs. There are income scales to which students must adhere.
For example, as of 2011, single parents with two children are eligible for assistance if they earn less than $32,780, though there are other factors to consider, such as other incomes.
Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge
The New York States Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge program assists the economically disadvantaged. City University of New York students who have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid must complete a TAP application also.
Then students may be eligible for close to $500 for general expenses as well as TAP. Single parents are awarded funds for the school year according to an income scale.
Private Scholarships
For New York-based private scholarships, single parents with low-incomes should visit Fastweb, one of the largest databases of private scholarships. Under the unique situation scholarships category, students can find college scholarships based on factors such as their status as single parents, public housing residents or public assistance recipients.
For example, the Anne M. Buscaglia Scholarships and the Challenger Award distributes $5,000 and $1,500 respectively to single mothers.

Obama Single Mom College Grants-Apply Free Grants For Mothers

Obama Single Mom College Grants-Apply Free Grants For Mothers
Moms like you simply do not want to take out a student loan for college. Why?
They are highly expensive for one. Secondly, the pay back scheme is stressful. So why bother with loans when you can just get a scholarship or a grant from the government?
The Obama single mom college grants provide that bridge that is so desperately needed for many single mothers: money to pay for college which does not need to be repaid ever.
What is the Obama grant?
The official name is the Federal Pell Grant and it is financial aid that has been around for some time now. But it is only recently that it came back into the spotlight. Indeed, many moms probably didn't even know it existed until it made it back into the news after Obama raised the amount to over $5000.
The reasons that single moms should get this grant or another scholarship to go to college are numerous:
1. You'll get more job opportunities when you have a degree or qualification.
2. You will get paid more in your job: college graduates almost always get a higher salary.
3. You will obtain a broad view of the world and its issues.
4. You can pursue a career that not only pays well, but one that interests you too.
5. Your children will look up to you in admiration and will seek to follow in your determined, successful footsteps.
These are just five of the reasons why going to college with the Obama single mom grants or other scholarship funds is simply the best choice you will ever make.

School Grants For Single Moms-Free Education Grants For single Mothers

School Grants For Single Moms-Free Education Grants For single Mothers
College is a pricey endeavor no matter who you are. It can rack up thousands and thousands of dollars and cost as much as buying one’s first home. Paying for college is that much more difficult for single mothers.
Having the time to balance school and a child is one thing, but paying for childcare on top of tuition, living expenses, and book is quite another. Single mothers have expenses that are unique to them.
This is why it is harder for such women to return to school. Thankfully, there are many funding options available to make this transition that much easier.
If you are looking for funding for school, you should definitely look into grants. Unlike scholarships which are merit-focused and loans which have to be paid back, grants are basically free money.
If you are a single mother looking for funding for school, grants are really the best decision. You will receive the funds you desperately need so that you can take care of your child while returning to school. The following includes some basic tips for how to apply for and receive college grants for single mothers.
Look Into Federal and State Options
First off, you need to know that your federal and state government want you to succeed. After all, a country can only thrive if its people are thriving. Thus, you can be sure to find some great college grants for single mothers via your government.
The federal government has grants like the Pell Grant that are focused on helping those who are financially in need find funding for school.
Additionally, many states have programs for everyone from low-income families to adults who are returning to school for the first time. The type of grants that a state offers will depend on the state itself. Different areas provide different types of funding. Take the time to poke around on the Internet to see what government funding you qualify for.
Often, once you fill out the FAFSA, you will receive word on whether or not you qualify for these funds via your financial aid summary. If you have questions about why you do or do not qualify, please contact the financial aid offices of the schools. They will be able to provide you with more in-depth information.
Consider if You Qualify for Minority Grants
There are many minority grants out there.
Think about whether or not you qualify for such funding. For example, you can find grants for everything from those who suffer from learning disabilities to ethnic minorities like American Indians and African Americans. You can apply for a range of grants to see which you will receive.
No grant is too small to apply for. If you are single mother, then you know that every little bit definitely counts. These grants can be incredibly specific or very vague. Try to apply for anything that you might remotely qualify for. For example, you may find grants for left-handed Asian American mothers or you may find grants directed towards people who have learning disabilities. Be honest with yourself about whether or not you could make a case for qualifying for such loans and get to applying!
Women-Focused Grants
Historically, women have had to deal with big gaps when it came to how they were treated in comparison to men. If you are looking for college grants for single mothers, you should look for women-focused sources of funding.
You can find specific college grants for single mothers via many women-focused organizations. And of course, there are grants for women of all types from corporations, non-profits, and professional types of organizations. These funds are meant to close the wage gap so that women receive the same training, payment, and education as their male counterparts.
Search Online
If you want to find stellar college grants for single mothers, you need to use the Internet. This is one of the most important resources you have at your disposal. You can use the Internet at local libraries and cafes if you do not have it at home. This will enable you to compile a list of possible grants for which you can apply. Knowing what’s out there will enable you to find grants that could really help you pay for school while raising a child.
The great thing about the Internet is that you can really share information with a range of people. Take the time to read websites, blogs, and forums focused around scholarships and single mother issues. You just might hear about college grants for single mothers you didn’t know about before.
Take the time to really engage with other people in these spaces. You never know who will hear of a small grant that could do everything from pay for books to help you pay for childcare expenses.
Check With the College
You never know what different colleges and universities may have to offer you. When looking for college grants for single mothers, take the time to see if the organization has any grants that they give to women, single mothers, and adults returning to school after an absence. It really doesn’t hurt to ask. You just might find the funds you need.
Ask Single Mother Focused Organizations
There are a lot of groups out there for single mothers. Turn to single mother support groups and professional organizations to see if they have funds to support your education. Many of them may have grants that could help you pay for both tuition and for living expenses.
Similarly, think about organizations in your community that may offer such funds. Many religious and non-profit groups run small grant programs for people in the community. See what they have to offer you so that you can really explore each of your points.
Get Organized and Collect Documents
Once you have a potential list of schools and grants, it’s time to get organized. Make a calendar that has all of the deadlines in place so that you can work ahead and really stay on top of them.
Organizations that give out grants will not often grant exceptions to their deadlines. This means that you really need to be at the peak of your game. Turn in applications in early so that if they are lost or damaged, you can then send replacement documents without it being much of an issue. When it comes to securing money for school, you really can’t afford to play around. This is the investment of a lifetime.
You should also make copies of all of your important documents. This will help you figure out which schools and which grants need which documents. Request many copies of your transcripts, letters of recommendation, and tax forms. These are some of the most commonly asked for documents for grants.
Lastly, keep track of which grants you send off so that you can receive confirmation that they were received. You may want to include a self-enclosed-stamped envelope for this very purpose. This will ensure that your application has been processed so that you won’t have to wonder if it was lost in the mail. Keeping detailed records is important because you may be able to look at a past application to help you on new ones as they pop up.
Double- and Triple-Check Your Work
You never want to submit a grant application that has errors on it. Instead, be sure to proofread everything from the application forms and documents to your essays. If you spill food or drink on paperwork, take the time to start over. You want to show organization that you are professional and polished. To ensure that you submit error free work, have loved ones proofread your applications.
This could mean the difference between you receiving a grant.
Explain Your Situation in Applications
When you apply for these grants, be clear about why you need this money. This is a time to really explain how difficult it can be to attend school, raise a child, and earn enough money to live on while paying tuition. Do not shy away from the realities of this situation.
Of course, you do not want to play the victim. Instead, be specific about how the funds will help you succeed in life and really create a solid future for you and your child. There are many college grants for single mothers available today. You need to show organizations that you are responsible and focused so that the groups then see that you are a valuable investment.
Being a single mother can be a full time job. There are many groups out there that have funding to help you do everything from fund your tuition to find daycare options for your little ones. Take the time to really craft strong essays and applications to different grant programs so that you can find the money you need to attend school. An education is an important investment for a family.
If you have a degree, your job options will expand and you will be able to really provide a stable life for your child. Take this research and application process seriously so that you can have a bright and shiny future for you and your child.

Housing Assistance For Single Mothers in Maryland-Grant Money For Moms

Housing Assistance For Single Mothers in Maryland-Grant Money For Moms
Two state agencies in Maryland operate eight housing assistance programs that can help single mothers in Maryland. They're not all grants programs, but they each seek to stabilize your family's economic situation by providing you with services and keeping your family in safe affordable housing. The Maryland Department of Housing & Community Development and the Maryland Department of Human Resources are two resources to connect with to get help.
Housing Choice Voucher Program
One of your first lines of defense against a serious housing issue is a federally funded, Maryland-administered program known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program. Formerly known as Section 8, the program provides subsidies of your rent, so you pay a portion and the government pays a portion.
Your portion would be no more than 40 percent of your monthly income. You're allowed to find your own home, but it has to meet certain quality standards. The program is for low-income families, and what's low income is indexed to people in your area. To be eligible, your annual income can't be greater than 50 percent of the area median income.
Rental Allowance Program
The Maryland Department of Housing & Community Development also runs the Rental Allowance Program. Through RAP, as it's known, the state gives money to local governments to dole out in grants to low-income families who either are homeless or have an emergency housing need. Its goal is to get families off the streets and into permanent housing. You can receive the allowance for up to 12 months. In most cases, you can apply through your county social services agency.
Homelessness Prevention & Housing Counseling Programs
Maryland Department of Human Resources's Office of Grants Management runs five housing programs that can help single mothers. You can call 410-767-7285 to apply for help from each program. The Homelessness Prevention Program is for families with a pending eviction. The program doesn't provide money, but access to support counselors to work with you and your landlord to prevent the eviction. The Housing Counselor Program operates only in Baltimore, Harford, Montgomery and Washington counties, as well as Baltimore City.
This program assists low-income families who are homeless or in "imminent danger of becoming homeless." It helps you find and rent permanent housing. The counselors help you establish adequate credit and apply for subsidized housing. This program puts you in touch with organizations that will help you with first and last month's security deposits, paying your utilities and getting you furniture.
It also helps you when you're jeopardized by a rent increase or get a new job that's too far away from your home when you don't have stable transportation. It helps you locate space nearer your new job and a public transportation route.
Service-Linked Housing Program
The Service-Linked Housing Program seeks to prevent an episode of homelessness by stepping in to help in a precarious economic situation. It connects you with health-care services, education and job training, employment, addiction services and other types of counseling. It only operates in 12 of Maryland's 23 counties, and in Baltimore City.
Emergency and Crisis Situations
The state also provides a network of shelters for people who are homeless. You can contact a shelter for help using the Directory of Maryland Emergency Shelters and Transitional Housing Programs (see Resources). In addition, the state has special crisis shelters in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Garrett Harford, Montgomery, Prince George's, Somerset, St. Mary's, Wicomico and Worcester counties. They are essentially safe houses for women who are homeless and fleeing dangerous situations. They provide room and board and referrals to physical and mental health care, employment services and case management.

Emergency Home Assistance For Single Moms-Free Government help For Moms

Emergency Home Assistance For Single Moms-Free Government help For Moms
There are times in life when it may be necessary for a mother, with or without a spouse, to find emergency assistance for single moms in order to care for her children. There are many programs that cater to single mothers, helping them find assistance during times of financial crisis or abuse.
Emergency Shelter
Sometimes it's not possible for a mother to stay in a home with a child due to financial problems or abusive situations. Catholic Charities and the Society of St. Vincent DePaul are two organizations that offer temporary housing for women in these predicaments. Their programs provide immediate support to women who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless, and provide services to help get the mother's life back on track.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is available in the form of temporary grants or loans from charitable organizations. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), a division of the Administration for Children and Family Services, offers emergency financial assistance
If you are in need of emergency financial assistance, you can also call 211, which is available in most states, to see what is offered locally. The Department of Housing and Urban Development also offers emergency grants to help rebuild or remodel inadequate shelter.
Pregnant Mothers
Pregnant women who need financial assistance or a place to stay present a unique challenge. Luckily, there are several organizations that allow young women to stay in a safe environment during their pregnancy. Locations like Sarah's Place, Friends of the Unborn, Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home and Mercy House Ministries allow young women who are either wards of the state or in unsafe situations to live in a caring environment for the duration of their pregnancy.
Housing Solutions
Temporary housing solutions include perusing Craigslist for those who may need a roommate and utilizing the CoAbode network. CoAbode helps connect single mothers with one another so that they can share housing and possibly finances with one another during rough patches.
This helps reduce the financial strain placed on parents and may help keep some mothers with children off the streets. Habitat for Humanity also offers permanent solutions for single mothers in need of housing by enlisting volunteers to build a sustainable shelter.
